Mao's second- in- command, Lin Biao, gives a speech encouraging students to return to the" basic principles" of the revolutionary movement.

General Mao Ze Dong officially starts the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

Mao orders the Red Guards to destroy the Four Olds.

All forms of religion are condemned and open forms of worship are banned. Many religious people are imprisoned and churches/ temples are closed or destroyed.

Red Gaurds run ramped and fight amongst themselves and others. More than 400,000 people are killed, beaten, tortured, imprisoned and humiliated. Red Guards attack numerous political commitees and offices, often replacing the leaders with Radicals, who were extremist belivers in Mao. They also destroyed many religious statues and buildings.

Lin Biao plans to assassinate Mao and take the title of Chairman for himself. His plan is discovered though, and when he attempts to escape to Mongolia, his plane mysteriously crashes.
October 1973
Gang of Four formed by Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, and three other members of his party, Zhang Chunqiao, Wang Hongwen, and Yao Wenyuan.
September 9, 1976
Mao dies. The Gang of Four tries to take power and continue Mao’s quest to “reform” China.
